Chattanooga's Walnut Street Bridge is already one of the city's most beloved public spaces. It’s a place where people walk, pause, and take in the river. "Chatt Spots" turns one bench on that bridge into something more: a visible, low-barrier point of connection for anyone who could use a conversation about their mental health. This is not therapy. It's a painted bench, distinct from the others, staffed by trained community members who can offer evidence-based guidance, connect people to local behavioral health and social resources, or simply be present when someone needs to talk....

Obstacles

The biggest hurdles are city permitting for bench placement on a public bridge and securing a host organization willing to carry liability. After that, it's sustaining volunteer recruitment and making sure the bench doesn't become a well-intentioned installation that goes unstaffed after the initial enthusiasm fades.

It may be helpful to partner with local counseling and social work academic programs. Their students are required to do practicum and internship hours, and this project could be approved with proper supervision by licensed counselors and social workers.
